Today, amazing progress with Thomas. Helen picked us up at 3 pm and when I tried to hand Thomas to her so I could get into the van, Thomas was like no way. Finally, at the Chinese office where we applied for Thomas' passport he let Helen pick him up. (He also likes Grama Lou and at breakfast this morning he put his arms up for her to pick him up). When we got back from the passport office Thomas was playing with Grama Sunny and started to say "Ni Hao" - hello. The night before he would say "la" and "ma" and "ha". After Grama Sunny went back to her room, he started pointing at things and saying Ni Hao. I would say what things are called: crayons, lamp, car, book, etc. Right now he is dumping out his box of crayons and putting them back in the box over and over saying what sounds like "now". It's exciting that he feels comfortable enough to start exploring and learning, especially after practically being silent and flat for two days.
Helen keeps asking what he is eating and if he is crying. So far, no crying. Just plopping down on his butt when he wants something or letting out a little shriek when scared or if he doesn't want to do something. As far as eating, he doesn't turn anything down. At breakfast he had soupy oatmeal, scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, watermelon, and a waffle triangle.Helen asks if I have given him any soft rice or noodles. Nope. She will probably ask again tomorrow. Helen also asks if we have had Cantonese food yet. Just what is served at the breakfast buffet so far. Today, we went to McDonalds and ordered off the Chinese menu. Spicy fried chicken sandwiches. Really good. Thomas got his first McDonald's french fries. I also got an oreo McFlurry which Thomas tried but it was too cold for his palate.
More later.
